Walks and cycle rides from schools

Here are two examples of projects delivering bespoke routes for schools:-

Oakfield CE Primary School - 2011
This was an NHS-funded project, to promote the health benefits of physical activity in an area of deprivation. We worked with pupils so that they identified local walks, including exploring the local countryside and mapping the children’s chosen walk onto the Walk4Life website. We also created an adventure trail, for the whole family to use. The Oakfield Countryside Walk is available to download from www.walk4life.info

“I have lived here all my life and didn’t know about this route”
“I will do this with my children”
“I have enjoyed being out with the kids, and noticing more because they are noticing things”
Parents at Oakfield CE Primary School

“Sometimes if you walk to places you haven’t been, you can see lots of things, and you can get taken over by it.”
Pupil at Oakfield CE Primary School

Brighstone to Shorwell Quiet Lanes Cycle Route – 2011

Working with the school and local community, we identified a quieter cycle route away from the main road, linking the Isle of Wight villages of Brighstone and Shorwell. Involving the local history society, we facilitated the children to produce a map and leaflet, for families to use as a leisure resource and for residents and visitors alike. The leaflet and map is available to download from Brighstone Parish Council at www.brighstoneparish.org ; copies are available from  the school, Brighstone Community Library or the Village Shop, or by contacting info@helenstichbury. com

"We all enjoyed this cycle route. It's lovely to experience the sounds and smells of our beautiful countryside. It's great to get the children out of the garden and on to the road, away from the rush of everyday life, you feel safe teaching young children road safety"
Parent, Brighstone CE Primary School
