‘Buggy walks’ from Children’s Centres
Aimed at encouraging young families to increase activity by enabling them to access the local countryside, Helen Stichbury has developed circular walking routes based at Children’s Centres. Projects have included working with families to identify routes, route assessment, the production of route cards, and local interest ‘spotter’ cards which have proved very popular with school-age children.
In association with the West Wight Landscape Partnership, we worked with parents from Freshwater Children’s Centre and produced seven routes in the west of the Isle of Wight. The routes are accessible for those with mobility issues as well as parents with pushchairs and prams, as there are no stiles. As well as bespoke maps and route information, there is also local history and interest information. The routes are downloadable from www.wwlp.co.uk
Sandown and Shanklin
A similar project identifying circular walks in the Sandown and Shanklin area was funded by the Isle of Wight NHS, with all the walks being downloadable from www.walk4life.info
